Types of Tooth Extraction We Offer in Edinburgh
Our Edinburgh dental clinic offers both simple and surgical extractions, tailored to your individual needs and oral health situation.
Simple (Routine) Extraction
For fully erupted and accessible teeth. Performed under local anaesthetic and usually completed in 20–30 minutes. Suitable for decayed, cracked, or loose teeth.
Surgical Extraction
Required when a tooth is broken below the gum line or has not fully erupted. Involves a small incision. Performed under local anaesthetic
Wisdom Tooth Extraction
Impacted or partially erupted wisdom teeth often require surgical removal. We handle all levels of complexity, from simple to fully impacted cases.
Baby Tooth Extraction
Gentle removal of retained or problematic milk teeth in children. We use a child-friendly approach and careful pain management.
Multiple Tooth Extraction
Where several teeth require removal, we plan treatment carefully to minimise recovery time.
Anxious patients
We take special care with anxious patients, using gentle techniques and clear communication to ensure you’re comfortable and at ease before we begin any treatment.
When Might You Need a Tooth Extracted?
Our Edinburgh dentists always aim to save a tooth wherever possible. However, extraction may be the most appropriate solution in the following situations:
- Severe tooth decay that cannot be restored with a filling or crown
- A cracked or fractured tooth extending below the gum line
- Advanced gum disease causing significant tooth loosening
- Impacted or partially erupted wisdom teeth causing pain or infection
- Overcrowding — to create space for orthodontic treatment
- A failed root canal where the tooth cannot be saved
- Dental trauma from an accident or injury
- Baby teeth that have not fallen out naturally
What Happens During a Tooth Extraction in Edinburgh?
We guide you through every stage of the process so you always know what to expect.
Initial Consultation
Digital X-rays to assess root structure. All treatment options and costs explained clearly before we proceed.
Local Anaesthetic
A local anaesthetic is carefully administered to ensure the area is completely numb and pain-free before treatment begins.
The Extraction
Tooth gently loosened and lifted (simple) or accessed via a small incision (surgical). Pressure felt, but no pain.
Post-Extraction Care
Gauze placed over the socket. Clear written and verbal aftercare instructions provided. Our team is always on hand.
Follow-Up Appointment
For surgical extractions, a follow-up visit to check healing. We also discuss tooth replacement options if needed.
Tooth Extraction Aftercare
Good aftercare is essential to a quick, comfortable recovery after a tooth extraction . Our team provides detailed written aftercare instructions tailored to your specific procedure.
In the first 24 hours:
Bite gently on the gauze for 30–45 minutes to help the socket clot. Avoid rinsing, smoking, alcohol, and strenuous exercise. Stick to soft foods and cold or lukewarm liquids. Take pain relief as directed — ibuprofen or paracetamol are usually sufficient.
Days 2–7:
Gently rinse with warm salt water from the following day. Eat soft foods (soup, mashed potato, yoghurt). Most patients return to normal activities within 24–48 hours of a simple extraction.
When to contact us:
Call our Edinburgh clinic if you experience increasing pain after 48 hours (possible dry socket), persistent bleeding, worsening swelling, or a high temperature. We are always here to support your recovery.

Frequently Asked Questions — Tooth Extraction Edinburgh
Everything you need to know about tooth extraction, answered by our dental team.
Can I get a tooth extracted the same day in Edinburgh?
In urgent cases such as a dental abscess or severe tooth pain, we do our best to offer same-day or next-day extraction appointments . Call us on 0131 629 1158 and we will assess your situation and prioritise your care accordingly.
Do I need a referral to have a tooth extracted?
No referral is required. You can contact us directly to book a consultation. We accept new patients, patients not currently registered with any practice, and visitors to Edinburgh.
Can I drive after a tooth extraction?
If you have had only local anaesthetic, you can generally drive once the numbness has fully worn off — usually 2–3 hours after the procedure. If you have had sedation, you must arrange for someone to drive you home. You must not drive for 24 hours following sedation.
What can I eat after a tooth extraction in Edinburgh?
For the first 24 hours, stick to cold or lukewarm soft foods such as yoghurt, ice cream, smoothies (no straw), mashed potato, and soup. Avoid hot foods, hard foods, and anything that requires heavy chewing on the extraction side. After 48–72 hours, gradually reintroduce a normal diet as comfort allows.
Is wisdom tooth extraction available at your Edinburgh clinic?
Yes. We provide both simple and surgical wisdom tooth extractions in Edinburgh. If your wisdom tooth is causing pain, infection, or is impacted, we can assess it with digital X-rays and advise on the most appropriate treatment.
What is the difference between a simple and surgical extraction?
A simple extraction is performed on a tooth that is fully visible in the mouth and can be loosened and removed with dental forceps. A surgical extraction is required when a tooth is broken at the gum line, has not fully erupted, or is impacted — a small incision in the gum is needed to access the tooth. Our dentist will assess which type you need using digital X-rays.
Are there alternatives to tooth extraction?
We always explore alternatives before recommending extraction. Depending on the condition of the tooth, options may include a filling, root canal treatment, a crown, or periodontal therapy. However, when a tooth is beyond restoration, extraction is often the most appropriate route to protect your overall oral health.
